CES Model 975 - Computer Repair backhome
I just received my new 975 trainer, unpacked it, turned it on, and nothing happened. What is wrong?
All of our trainers are shipped fully assembled and tested, and have undergone 72 hours of bench burn in before shipping. The 975 trainer is final inspected by an A+ Certified technician before the trainer is packed and shipped. If you receive a 975 trainer that you feel is not working, or is exhibiting a "dead on arrival" symptom, the trainer may have suffered concealed damage in shipping. You can try the following steps to see if it resolves the situation, if not, contact support.
  • Recheck that all connectors are properly inserted into their correct location.
  • Check to see that the trainer is plugged into a 120 V outlet, and that the outlet is receiving power.
  • Check the position of the intensity controls on the monitor, be sure that you set them to the mid
scale position, if the monitor supplied uses analog controls. If the monitor uses digital controls,
press the control to see if video is present on the monitor.
  • Check the position of the fault insertion switches. Both the monitor and the computer system
unit have fault insertion switches that must be set to the "0" or off position for the trainer to function properly.
  • TURN OFF THE TRAINER POWER, remove the 6 screws from the glass cover, and firmly, but carefully,
press all of the expansion cards down, into their sockets. Turn on the trainer and verify proper operation.
  • TURN OFF THE TRAINER POWER, Remove the sound card, and POST diagnostic card, turn on the trainer
    and verify operation.
  • TURN OFF THE TRAINER POWER, replace all cards you removed in step 6, into the trainer, turn on the power
to the trainer, and make note of any numbers displayed on the POST card and contact technical support.
My trainer has been operating perfectly, but now I have no sound when the student runs the multimedia presentation. What is wrong?
This is most likely not a hardware issue, but a problem with the sound card drivers. Either the sound card drivers have been removed by the student or by a problem with Windows. Simply locate the sound card drivers that are furnished with the instructors package, and reinstall the sound card drivers. If this solves the problem, you will notice that Windows will place a picture of a speaker in the system tray next to the time of day clock.
I want to install a Windows protection program to keep the students from "playing" with my trainer.
What program do you recommend? What effect will this have on my trainer?
We have evaluated several different, commercially available protection programs available for Windows 9X. All these programs work to prevent access to various functions available to the user. The purpose of this trainer is a computer repair trainer, and we do not recommend or sanction the installation of any software that restricts access to the computer. Since the laboratory experiments manipulate the hardware directly in some cases and other experiments require DOS access, these lock out programs will directly interfere with the operation of the repair trainer. If school policy or your personal preference dictates that you install a lock down program, please note that you are doing so at your own risk, and consequences. CES Industries, Inc. cannot be held responsible for experiments that do not function as described in the instructors manual, or student manual if the trainer has any software that interferes with the normal operation of the Windows operating system. This includes anti-virus programs as well. The trainer is supplied with an emergency recovery disk, that in the event the student damages the computer, you can recover the system to factory specification by simply using the emergency recovery disk.
The multimedia presentation disk has disappeared, what do I do now?
Contact technical support, or fill out the support form at the bottom of this page, and state that you have
lost your courseware disk. You will be contacted with the replacement cost of the disk, and instructions for obtaining a new disk.
I think that my multimedia courseware disk is not working correctly. Whenever I use the disk, it starts to run, then the computer freezes. I can use other programs without this happening.
This problem is usually associated with the CD-ROM drive itself. You can overcome this problem by changing the read-ahead setting in Windows. Select the Start... Settings.... Control Panel... System settings and then select the performance tab. Under File system, select CD-ROM and from the drop down box, which is normally set to "Quad Speed or Higher" change this setting to No Read Ahead. You will have to reboot the computer after changing this setting. If this does not solve the problem, return the disk for replacement.
The student selects a fault, but the fault appears not to work.
The fault switch is protected from accidental activation by a key switch that must be enabled by the instructor.
We want to add a scanner to the trainer, can we install this option on the trainer.
We do not recommend that you use this computer repair trainer as a working classroom computer. This trainer is designed to teach computer technology, and not be used as a workstation. We cannot stop you from adding hardware or software to the computer, as you own the unit, but keep in mind that if a problem arises with the computer repair trainer, and the problem is due to hardware or software installed by you or a third party, we will not repair the trainer under the warranty.
My multimedia disk indicates an error when it first starts. It states that it cannot locate the swap file, what is wrong?
Nothing, simply press the OK button to acknowledge this error and ignore it.
